Big Idea

I think that I want to try to run an entire essay unit through Google Docs. Is it possible to run a google site that outlines the writing assignment, complete with links to useful writing sites, maybe good examples for them to emulate? Can I have the students do their peer editing through google docs and submit the marked up pages? Can multiple students make corrections in different colors? Is this going to be a huge pain in the rear? I like the idea of providing them with the assignment online. I think it could be especially effective for my honors classes...

Using Thinkfinity

For this assignment I used an article from Thinkfinity about Route 66. I actually couldn’t find a whole lot to use on the site. I am currently teaching Slaughterhouse 5, for which there wasn’t any material to choose, and The Grapes of Wrath, for which there were 10-15 different sources to use. I picked this article from The National Geographic because we had just finished the chapters that bring the Joad family from Oklahoma to California. The article was interesting and did a good job of acting as a starting point for a discussion of symbolic imagery from the chapters the students had read. In the future I will see if there are more materials available for my ELD Reading class. I think this site is useful for those times when you need to find a good activity and cant think of anything.
